Inbound and outbound voice routing are two sides of the same infrastructure. Here's how DID and DOD work together — and how NiCE CXone manages both.
Direct inward dialing (DID) and direct outward dialing (DOD) are the complementary inbound and outbound voice routing mechanisms in enterprise contact centers. DID controls how external callers reach internal destinations. DOD controls how agents access external trunk lines and what caller identity they present to the people they call. Both operate within the same SIP trunk infrastructure and are managed together in NiCE CXone. Return to the Direct Inward Dialing overview →
Definitions: DID and DOD
| Concept | Definition | Direction | NiCE CXone Role |
|---|---|---|---|
| DID — Direct Inward Dialing | Assigns unique external numbers to internal extensions so external callers can reach them directly | Inbound ↓ | Provisioned and routed via CXone admin; drives IVR, ACD, and skills routing |
| DOD — Direct Outward Dialing | Enables internal extensions to access external trunk lines and controls the caller ID presented on outbound calls | Outbound ↑ | Configured alongside DID; controls SIP trunk access and CLI presentation for outbound |
How Direct Outward Dialing Works
When an agent initiates an outbound call in NiCE CXone, the platform's DOD configuration determines: which SIP trunk the call exits on, what caller ID (CLI / ANI) the recipient sees, whether the call is permitted (based on dialing restrictions), and how the call is logged and attributed in reporting.
Outbound Call Flow with DOD on NiCE CXone
1. Agent
- Initiates outbound call via CXone softphone
- Agent extension identified
2. DOD Logic
- DOD configuration selects trunk
- Assigns caller ID (CLI)
- Applies STIR/SHAKEN attestation
3. SIP Trunk
- Call exits on assigned SIP trunk
- INVITE carries CLI to carrier
4. Recipient
- External call arrives
- Caller ID shown as configured
DID and DOD Configuration Patterns
1-to-1 DID/DOD - Symmetric Agent Identity
Each agent has one DID number (inbound) and presents the same number as outbound caller ID. Provides consistent contact identity. Common in sales and account management roles.
Pooled DOD - Shared Outbound CLI
Multiple agents share a single outbound caller ID — typically a department number or campaign-specific number. Simplifies number management but requires platform-level attribution for agent accountability.
Campaign DOD - Campaign-Specific CLI
Outbound campaigns present a specific DID number as caller ID, allowing customers who receive the call to call back on the same campaign line. Supports consistent campaign journey tracking.

STIR/SHAKEN and DOD Compliance
STIR/SHAKEN (Secure Telephone Identity Revisited / Signature-based Handling of Asserted information using toKENs) is a US regulatory framework requiring voice service providers to digitally authenticate caller ID on outbound calls. Contact centers with misconfigured DOD — presenting unauthorized caller ID numbers — risk STIR/SHAKEN attestation failures, which result in calls being labeled as potential spam on recipient devices.
COMPLIANCE NOTE
NiCE CXone supports STIR/SHAKEN attestation for enterprise outbound calls, helping contact centers avoid spam labeling and meet FCC compliance requirements. Proper DOD configuration is a prerequisite for full attestation. Review your outbound caller ID assignments with your carrier and CXone administrator before launching outbound campaigns.
Shared SIP Trunks for DID and DOD
In most enterprise contact center architectures, DID (inbound) and DOD (outbound) traffic shares the same pool of SIP trunk channels. Trunk capacity planning must account for simultaneous inbound and outbound call volume to prevent trunk exhaustion. NiCE CXone provides real-time trunk utilization monitoring and supports overflow routing to prevent calls from being dropped during peak concurrent volume.
Peak Concurrent
Inbound + outbound calls = required concurrent SIP channels — always plan 20% buffer capacity for spikes
Real-Time Monitor
NiCE CXone shows live trunk utilization — administrators see capacity headroom at a glance before issues develop
