What Are AI Conversations?

Last Updated September 22, 2026

AI conversations are interactions between a person and an artificial intelligence system that can understand natural language, maintain conversational context and respond dynamically. In customer service, these conversations may take place in chat, messaging or voice and can range from answering a question to completing an approved service workflow.

What happens during an AI conversation

  1. The customer asks a question or describes a need in natural language.
  2. The AI identifies likely intent, entities and relevant context.
  3. The system retrieves approved knowledge or calls an authorized tool when needed.
  4. The AI generates or selects a response based on the available information.
  5. The interaction continues with context from prior turns.
  6. The AI completes the task or escalates with the conversation history when human help is needed.

Where AI-driven conversations are useful

  • Answering common service questions.
  • Guiding customers through troubleshooting.
  • Collecting information before agent handoff.
  • Checking order, appointment or case status.
  • Completing simple account or service changes.
  • Handling voice self-service with natural speech.
  • Supporting proactive conversations triggered by events.

What makes an AI conversation trustworthy

Natural language is only one part of a good experience. The AI should use current, approved knowledge and make clear when it cannot answer confidently. When actions are involved, it should have narrowly scoped permissions and confirm important details before making a change.

The customer should also be able to reach a person without losing the context already provided.

Voice and multimodal AI conversations

AI conversations increasingly extend beyond text. Voice AI combines speech recognition, natural language understanding, generative models and speech synthesis to create spoken interactions. In some digital experiences, AI may also interpret documents, images or structured data as part of the workflow.

The same design principles still apply: grounding, permissions, observability and safe escalation matter regardless of modality.

How to measure AI conversation quality

  • Accurate resolution or task completion.
  • Fallback and escalation rate.
  • Customer effort and satisfaction.
  • Knowledge grounding and answer accuracy.
  • Repeat contact after the interaction.
  • Latency and conversation responsiveness.
  • Quality of context transferred to a human agent.
