Signs your AI chatbot is doing more harm than good

If customers frequently express frustration or explicitly request a human agent immediately upon engaging with the chatbot, it is failing to meet basic expectations. High abandonment rates mid-conversation indicate the bot is not understanding intent accurately or is trapping customers in unhelpful loops. Negative sentiment specifically referencing the chatbot in post-interaction surveys or social media is a direct signal worth tracking systematically. When escalations from the chatbot to human agents arrive without adequate context, agents must start from scratch, effectively doubling the customer's effort and eroding trust further. If containment rates remain low despite the bot handling high volume, customers may be accepting incomplete resolutions rather than experiencing genuine deflection. These patterns typically point to insufficient natural language understanding training or poorly defined scope boundaries that need redesign.
