What Is Intraday Management in Workforce Management?
Last Updated September 22, 2026
Intraday management is the workforce management process used to keep contact center staffing aligned with demand as the day unfolds. When actual volume, handle time, absenteeism or channel mix differs from the forecast, workforce teams can reforecast the remaining intervals and adjust schedules or staffing actions accordingly.
What intraday teams monitor
- Actual vs. forecast interaction volume.
- Actual vs. forecast handle time.
- Staffing and unplanned absence.
- Schedule adherence and available capacity.
- Queue performance and service levels.
- Channel or skill imbalances.
A typical intraday workflow
- Identify a meaningful variance from the plan.
- Determine whether the driver is volume, handle time, staffing or another event.
- Reforecast the remaining intervals.
- Estimate customer and staffing impact if no action is taken.
- Choose the least disruptive effective response.
- Communicate and execute the change.
- Measure whether conditions stabilized.
Common intraday actions
Intraday management vs. real-time adherence
Real-time adherence focuses on whether individual employees are following their scheduled activities. Intraday management looks at the broader operation: whether demand, staffing and service remain balanced. RTA is one input into intraday decision-making, not the whole process.
Use automation carefully
Automated alerts and recommendations can help workforce teams respond faster, especially in large operations. But schedule changes affect people. Systems should explain why a change is recommended and respect labor rules, employee preferences and business constraints.
Human planners should retain oversight for actions with significant employee impact.
Measure intraday effectiveness
- Service-level recovery.
- Forecast error after reforecasting.
- Overtime and undertime.
- Number and severity of schedule changes.
- Adherence and staffing recovery.
- Employee disruption and acceptance of voluntary actions.
