BALTIMORE CITIWATCH TEAMS UP WITH NICE TO CUT CRIME

Ranked among the largest U.S. cities, Baltimore, nicknamed the “Charm City,” is rich in culture and history. In recent years, it has become a model for urban renewal with its redeveloped Inner Harbor area, historic neighborhoods and sites that attract nearly 13 million visitors each year. But while tourism is thriving in this charmed city, crime is on the wane, thanks to Baltimore’s CitiWatch initiative that incorporates intelligent CCTV monitoring from NICE.

Located on North Howard Street in the heart of Baltimore, the CitiWatch Control Center was unveiled in May 2005. From the center, trained civilian employees monitor hundreds of CCTV cameras around the clock for any sign of terrorist or criminal activity. Upon being alerted to suspicious activity, CitiWatch Control Center personnel can immediately notify police, who then rapidly respond.

Connected to the CitiWatch control room by miles upon miles of fiber optic cable, the 300 plus CCTV cameras are perched atop 13-foot poles that are strategically located throughout the city – at well known public hot spots like the Hippodrome Theatre, Oriole Park, the Baltimore Convention Center and the Inner Harbor.

While CitiWatch was initially envisioned as an anti-terrorism tool, the sophisticated CCTV monitoring system has paid crime fight dividends to the City as well – helping the Baltimore Police nab numerous suspects, and even solving crimes. In the areas where the cameras are installed, violent crime has gone down by 15 percent.
