What the Super Bowl Ads Can Tell Us about Speech Technology

Super Bowl ads are a fantastic window into the latest and greatest products on the consumer market. This year, speech technology was in the spotlight among the most talked about ads.

Amazon introduced its contribution to the Internet of Things with an ad  for Echo, its voice-activated wireless device control and speaker system. Watch Alec Baldwin, Dan Marino and friends have fun with it: 

 


And Hyundai's  latest feature in the Elantra , talk start, showed us that voice recognition can sometimes be a matter of life and death:

 


​What was naturally not said in those ads is that there have been some development challenges along the way, especially with accurate voice recognition in noisy environments - such as in a moving car, at a loud party, or in a busy office. In the consumer service contact center, for example, accurate and effective speech tech is extremely important. Almost as important as for escaping hungry bears.
