The Pros of PSAP Consolidation

Diamond Chaflawee

When you hear the word ‘consolidation,’ the first things that come to mind are somewhat negative: shutting down call centers to create a single larger one; saving money by using fewer staff, fewer systems, and reducing overhead; and so on. While on the surface, the main purpose of consolidation might be to save money, consolidation is actually one of the best ways to improve operations. By that I mean - you can utilize resources more efficiently and more effectively, while improving service to the public.

PSAPs’ Finest – exemplifying the best qualities

Linda Haelsen

Just this past week, NICE announced that it had opened nominations for the 2012 PSAPs’ Finest Awards. Sponsored by NICE, the PSAPs' Finest Awards recognize individuals for their contributions to public safety communications. Nominations are accepted in four PSAP (Public Safety Answering Point) categories: Director, Line Supervisor, Technician, and Telecommunicator of the year. In the six years the awards program has been in existence, hundreds of nominations have been received and more than two dozen recipients have been recognized.

What inspires you?

Linda Haelsen

I am a single mom. No, a supermom. I like to say I have two jobs – my day job, and my rest of the day job. Most days the lines between the two blur and it all just seems to run together in one long marathon. But with the kind of work I do (marketing) – even if I’m working late, I can at least check my job at the door at the end of the day. Probably not so for those who work in 9-1-1.

NICE Inform: one thousand sites strong and counting

Diamond Chaflawee

Recently, NICE announced that it has surpassed the 1000th NICE Inform installation mark. NICE Inform is a Next Generation 9-1-1-ready solution that enables emergency communications centers and other operations to capture and manage a wide range of multimedia incident information. The need for solutions like NICE Inform is particularly strong in Public Safety where 9-1-1 centers are gearing up for new sources of multimedia communications that will be enabled through Next Gen 9-1-1. NICE Inform brings these diverse multimedia information sources – voice, video, photos, text messages, Geographic Information Systems data, recorded CAD screens, etc. – together in one place for complete, authentic, incident reconstruction.

Preparing for Next Gen 9-1-1

Linda Haelsen

Historically, PSAPs (Public Safety Answering Points) have used recording technology to capture and preserve their 9-1-1 and radio communications. Recordings are the crucial link to reconstructing incidents. They recount who said what to whom and when — from the first chaotic moments of a 9-1-1 call to its eventual response and conclusion. But much has changed in the four decades since the first 9-1-1 call was placed. PSAPs now have sophisticated technologies available to them that they could have only dreamed of in the late 1960s. Today, there is vastly more multimedia information available to unlock the incident timeline of what happened, when. And even more is coming with Next Generation 9-1-1. This article, published in the winter edition of Government Buyer magazine, shows how the NICE Inform multimedia incident information management solution is helping PSAPs like the City of Westminster prepare for Next Gen 9-1-1.

Situation Management: What’s Next in NG9-1-1

Linda Haelsen

In the universe of public safety communications, the stars seem to be aligning for Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1). NG9-1-1 standards have taken shape and, by all reports, some emergency communications centers will be ready to receive live Next Gen 9-1-1 calls in the near future. Exactly when the complete transition to NG9-1-1 will take place is not entirely clear, but one thing is certain: when the mass migration does take place it will bring with it a flood of information—text, still images, streaming video, telematics, medical information, and data from an array of sensors and alerting devices, the likes of which 9-1-1 centers have not seen before.
